Bryncethin First XV 77 Sully Sports 18

Bryncethin rounded off the season in style with emphatic win and in the process became National League Division 6 Central champions at their first attempt.

Although Bryncethin played exciting rugby to overwhelm lowley Sully Sports it was their hard  fought 20 points to 9 mid week victory over Cambrian Welfare that formed the platform for their league championship.  For the game against Cambrian Welfare, who had beaten Bryncethin in the Worthington Cup Final

3 weeks ago, five regular backs were unavailable due to injury and coach Paul Watkin played at outside half with stand in wing Andrew Bayliss crossing for the only try of the game.

Before the game Cambrian Welfare stood at the top of the league with Bryncethin in second place 5 points adrift but with a game in hand and so it really was a make or break league decider.

in the game against Sully Sports there were tries for Andrew Bayliss (3), Huw King, Rowan Hobbs, Peter Puacca, Lloyd Jenkins (2), Russel Johns (3), Jimmy Smith and Mike Richards with Lloyd Jenkins adding 6 conversions.  Coaches Watkin and Keri Townley must be pleased with another outstanding season for the club that saw them reach their third consecutive Worthington Cup Final and win the league and after a gruelling end to the season everyone is looking forward to season 2008/09.

Bryncethin First XV 24 Clwb rygbi 8

Bryncethin returned to league action on Saturday and deserved this victory earning themselves what may be a valuable bonus point in the process.Prop Neil Hopkins opened the scoring for the home team with a try before Clwb Rygbi responded with a penalty to reduce the deficit to two points.Further first half tries for Bryncethin came from wing forward Andrew Bayliss and wing Rowan Hobbs with full back Lloyd Jenkins converting one with the visitors responding with a try of their own the first half closed at 17 - 8.

In the scond half Bryncethin had the benefit of the wind and the vast majority of the play was in the visitors half and with the home team dominating the set pieces and providing a stream of quality posession it seemed that a big score was on the cards. However it took a good kick from Jenkins that he gathered and then provided a try scoring pass to wing Hobbs to secure that fourth try and the bonus point. Jenkins converted to leave the final score at 24  -  8.

There were good performances from second rows Dai Bayliss and Kevin Baldwin and skipper Jamie Davies leading by example.

Bryncethin have four league games remaining and travel to Cambrian Welfare on Wednesday 23rd April before entertaining Llanrumney on Saturday 26th April.

Bryncethin First XV 8 Cambrian Welfare 20

Bryncethin lost out in the final of the Worthington Welsh Districts Cup for the second successive year at the Millenium Stadium but will have no complaints at the result against Rhondda club Cambrian Welfare.

Bryncethin started strongly and could have taken the lead when Lloyd Jenkins went close with an early penalty attempt, but it was Cambrian who opened the scoring with a penalty of their own. A defensive mix up and a cruel bounce of the ball enabled them to increase that lead to 10 points with a converted try before a well rehersed move  from a lineout saw hooker Neil Hopkins cross wide out to reduce the difference to 5 points.

Cambrian converted a further penalty to move to 13  5 before Jenkins responded with a penalty to leave the half time score at 13 - 8 to the Rhondda side The second half was fairly even and after a period of sustained pressure on the Cambrian line a dropped pass with the try line open meant that Bryncethin missed an opportunity to draw level. With ten minutes to go Cammbrian launched an attack that saw their wing pick up and cross under the posts from short range for a converted try and a final score of 20 - 8.

Although bitterly disappointed Bryncethin have no complaints and must now focus on the league and with four of their remaining five games at home they will be keen to give their supporters something to shout about.

Bryncethin entertain Clwb Rygbi on Saturday before travelling to Cambrian Welfare, last Saturdays opponents, on  Wednesday the 23rd April . Remaining fixtures , all at home , are Llanrumney on 26th April , Cambrian Welfare on 30th April and Sully Sports on 3rd May.

Everyone at the club would like to thank their supporters for turning up in their hundreds last Saturday and for making it a great day despite the result.

Clwb Rygbi 27 Bryncethin First XV 26

Bryncethin remain top of Division 6 Central after losing by the
narrowest of margins in this away fixture to their Cardiff rivals Clwb
Rygbi.
Bryncethin started well and some good support work by centre Chris
Williams was rewarded when he crossed for a try which was converted by
Lloyd Jenkins to give them a seven point lead. However the home side
responded quickly with a converted try of their own before scoring
another to take the lead 12-7.
Back came Bryncethin with a try by Andrew Bayliss but it was the home
side who finished the half the strongest scoring another 12 points to a
solitary penalty by Jenkins to leave the score 24-15 to Clwb Rygbi at
the interval.
Bryncethin started the second half stongly and sub Huw King crossed
for a try  to reduce the deficit before the home side kicked a further
penalty to open up a 7 point gap. Jenkins again stepped up to convert
two penalties and with a quarter of an hour still on the clock it
looked as if the league leaders may recover the situation, however it
was not to be and Bryncethin will be thankful that out of their 5
remaining league fixtures 4 are at home.
Bryncethin's man of the match was lock Kevin Baldwin and there were
good performances from Andrew Bayliss, Richard Handly, and experienced
centre Chris Williams.
Next week is  a huge one for the club when for the third season in
succession they appear in the final of the Worthington Welsh Districts
Cup Final which takes place at the Millenium Stadium.Tickets for the
match and the supporters coaches are still available from John Davies
on 07962 059299 or Mike Phillips on 07962 223078 so please come along

Bryncethin First XV 25 Glyncoch 12

Bryncethin maintained their good form in League Division 6 Central with
this win over Rhondda District side Glyncoch who are one of only two
teams to have beaten them in the league this season.
Bryncethin were quick off the mark with Mike Richards scoring an early
try that was converted by Lloyd Jenkins to give them a 7-0 lead.
Richards was again on hand to score the second try and Jenkins
completed the first half scoring with a penalty to leave the home side
with a 15-0 advantage.
It looked as if Bryncethin were going to build up a large score when
Huw King crossed early in the second half for a try that Jenkins
converted  to open up a 22 point lead but Glyncoch had other ideas and
scored 12 points of their own before Jenkins completed the days scoring
with a penalty to leave the final score at 25 - 12.
There were good performances from Neil Hopkins , Paul Evans and Jamie
Davies and although disappointed at not securing a bonus point coaches
Watkin and Townley must be satisfied with the build up to the
Worthington Cup Final at the Millennium  Stadium on 12th April.
Next week Bryncethin travel to Cardiff side Clwb Rygbi in the league.
Tickets have now been received for the Millennium Stadium Final and
anyone requiring a ticket should contact John Davies on 07962 059299 or

the supporters coaches.

Wick 18 Bryncethin Second XV 10

Bryncethin seconds were beaten 18 - 10 by Wick in the quarter final of
the Enoch Lewis cup in an entertaining match in which both sides played
some good rugby despite the conditions.
Bryncethin opened the scoring with a penalty from Simon Partridge who
also converted a try from Dennis Crompton to give the visitors a 10-0
lead before Wick scored two tries, a conversion and two penalties to
leave the final score at 18-10.
There were good performances from Gary Piper, Howard Knill and Peter
Puaca.

Markham 13 Bryncethin First XV 15

Despite a below par second half performance and determined resistance from Markham, Bryncethin deservedly won a place in the Worthington Welsh Districts Cup Final for an unprecedented third successive season.

The final against Rhondda rivals Cambrian Welfare will take place on the Millennium Stadium on Saturday 12th April.

Playing with the wind in the first half Markham were first to score with a penalty and then extended their lead to 10 - 0 with a converted try. However Bryncethin were starting to dominate at the set pieces and it was just reward when lock Jimmy Smith appeared wide out to score a try and reduce the deficit to 5 points.

Hooker Rhys James and his fellow front row forwards Steve Walters and Huw King had an outstanding first half taking a number of the oppositions put ins at the scrum and it was James who crossed for a try following some good work from flanker Mark Thomas to leave the score 10 - 10 at the break and Bryncethin in a strong position with the benefit of the elements in the second half.

The second period was as frustrating for the many travelling supporters as it was for the players as numerous wrong options and basic errors crept in and it was Markham who deservedly reclaimed the lead with a well struck penalty. As the minutes ticked away Bryncethin regained some composer and from a maul on the Markham line scrum half Andrew Veasy cleverly moved the ball to the short side and put wing Rowan Hobbs over for a try that was to prove to be the final score of the match.

In terms of performance it was a game of two halves from Bryncethin but it will be another great day out at the Millennium Stadium for the club, its loyal supporters and indeed the village itself on 12th April.

Treorchy 21 Bryncethin First XV 15

It was definetly a case of two halves at a wet and windy Oval as Bryncethin travelled to Treorchy for a friendly last Thursday evening.

The home tream used the elements to the full in the first half and built up a 21  -  0  lead at half time through three converted tries but it was a complete reversal in the second period with Bryncethin spending vertually all of the time in the Treorchy half of the field.

Gareth Pearce opened the scoring with a penalty before Jimmy Smith showed a great turn of speed to score a try which Pearce converted to leave the score at 21  -  10 to the home team. With Bryncethin camped in the Treorchy 22 it looked as if it was only a matter of time before they scored again and after some good work by the pack, skipper Jamie Davies put  over prop Huw King in the corner to reduce the deficit to just six points.

Despite further pressure Bryncethin were unable to press home the advantage but coaches Paul Watkin and Kerry Townley must have been pleased with their second half performance. There were good performances from Dai Bayliss, Rhys James and Andrew Veasey.

Next week Bryncethin travel to Blackwood to take on Gwent rivals Markham for a place in the Worthington Welsh Districts Final at the Millenium stadium and competition in the squad has been increased with the return of Lloyd Jenkins from his six month break playing rugby in Florida and Andrew Bayliss from injury

Wattstown 11 Bryncthin First XV 28

In one of their rare visits into the Bryncethin half Wattstown were awarded another penalty before the visitors scored another couple of tries through full back Mike Richards and wing Rowan Hobbs both converted by Pearce to leave the half time score at 28  - 6.

Bryncethin started the second half the stronger but failed to capitalise on the greater posession and territorial advantage in the first 20 minutes and indeed were forced to defend for the rest of the game with the home side receiving just reward with a try to leave the final score at 28 - 11.

There were good performances from Mike Richards , Gareth Pearce, Huw King, Kevin Baldwin and Paul Evans The next game for Bryncethin is a friendly at Treorchy on Thursday evening ( 21st February ) kick off at 7.15 p.m.
